History

Formed in 1927 the Rio Grande Volunteer Fire Company #72 has a long and evolving history of serving the Rio Grande, Cape May County, New Jersey community.

Early on, the company faced challenges of growth, leading to the construction of a new, modern firehouse in 1966, adjacent to the original structure.

The company has consistently updated its equipment and facilities to meet the changing needs of the community, with many additions to the firehouse, and many updates to fire apparatus. Notably, Rio Grande Fire Company was one of the first in Cape May County to utilize the “Jaws of Life” for extrication, demonstrating a commitment to advanced rescue capabilities.

The company has a rich history of acquiring and adapting fire apparatus to serve the growing needs of the area. Current apparatus includes:
